Body Scrub, Your Questions Answered
We have surveyed what questions people have about body scrub. Some are new to the exfoliation altogether and don't know what a body scrub is for; some feel they don't know where to start, given so many options in the market; some never heard or tried lavender oil based scrub and not sure what the benefits it brings. We have combined some most frequently asked questions below.
What is a body scrub?
The skin is in a constant state of recovery: dead skin rises to the surface, sheds naturally and reveals the baby soft skin underneath. This process slows over time, contributing to a buildup of dead cells on the skin’s surface. Add pollution and other forms of environmental stress to the mix, and you have a recipe for dull, rough and itchy skin.
Body scrubs are physical exfoliants that mechanically slough away dead skin cells and encourage the healthy production of new ones. The feel of a “scrub” typically comes from a combination of sugar or salt that is suspended in an oil base.
What are the benefits of a body scrub?
Remove dead skin to reveal the smooth, healthier skin underneath: As you massage the body scrub over your body, the exfoliating granules help to gently slough off dead skin and help boost the renewal process.
Enhance circulation and helps drain your lymph nodes: by increasing blood flow to the skin's surface;
Deep absorption of minerals and moisturiser: After all that deep cleansing work in the shower, the essential oils and post-wash moisturiser will be better able to soothe and hydrate your skin.
Eliminate impurities and support detoxification: Dr Tasneem Bhatia MD - integrative health expert, founder of CentrespringMD, and author of The Super Woman RX - states that:
"Your skin helps detoxification pathways with enzymes and chemical reactions that release toxins and decrease oxidative stress in the body."
Sugar or Salt?
Sugar granules are rounder and less abrasive than salt, making them a gentler exfoliant. A natural source of glycolic acid (an AHA), sugar breaks down layers of dead skin and smooths the skin’s surface. It also speeds up rehydration, keeping skin conditioned and moisturised. For this reason, sugar scrubs are a fantastic pick for dry and sensitive types.
Salt scrubs tend to have grittier particles and are particularly effective in smoothing and polishing. Salt also has detoxifying properties: its trace minerals are natural purifiers that draw out pore-clogging toxins and relieve congestion. This action invigorates the skin, promoting more efficient circulation and healthy skin cell turnover.
Why lavender oil as the oil base?
Lavender is well known for its vivid colour and delicate fragrance. Interestingly, many generations have used it for its medicinal benefits. The Ancient Romans and Greeks believed lavender helps purify the body and mind. Thus it was commonly used to treat anxiety, stress, depression, nausea among other health issues. Nowadays lavender’s versatility means you can find it in a lot of different treatments.
Aromatherapy: Lavender oil is often used in aromatherapy. It helps to reduce stress and anxiety, whilst bringing a sense of relaxation.
Good for sleep: Taking in the lavender smell soothes the nervous system which in turn can help improve quality of sleep. Whether it's applying a few drops of lavender oil onto the pillow or massaging into the skin, both work by calming the mind and body allowing for a good night's rest.
Improve skin: Inflamed or irritated skin can also be treated with lavender. Sometimes skin conditions such as eczema are linked to stress. Lavender works beautifully in these scenarios helping to calm the mind and the body. It also has antioxidant properties which help anti-aging by fighting off free radicals, leading to a brighter and more even skin complexion.
